Any good tips for moving?

Poppy: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? asked:

My husband, myself and our son are moving to a new house in September … only a few miles away.

Last time we moved it was so disorganized we really didn't plan it out. We were literally still pulling stuff out of storage boxes 1 year later (things we wanted and were looking for).

This time we want to do it right.

Does anyone have any good moving tips for an organized move?

I've looked at websites … I'm looking for personal ideas. Thanks

*We are having a professional mover move our stuff.

Pack one room at a time and mark each box with the room name and if you use a shipper put your name & new address on each box. Pack like items together or use towels to wrap and pack breakables. If there is something that can be damaged by water wrap it in plastic and seal it in tape.
When using a shipper make yourself a list of what is in each box and how many boxes you have. I know they will give you a manifest, but do not rely on them to do it right/or be totally truthful. Double check your tables with leaves and item like that – matching woods, etc.to make sure you get the correct ones back and check for possible breakage – do that when they are unloaded so you can make the claim right then before you sign the delivery receipt.

Clearly mark your boxes so they are identifiable when they reach the new home, the room they belong in and list the contents.
(example-kitchen/pans, mom's/clothes, bathroom/supplies)
You could even be more descriptive-(bath/towels, mom's closet,
son's shoes, hardware for beds, dad's office, etc.)

Anything you can do to help you realize what is in those boxes without having to rummage through them to find particular items
until you have the time or energy to unpack.

And If you load and unload things by room you will better be able to keep things grouped together on the moving truck and then carry these straight to the intended room.

Also another tip that is so helpful… purchase some paper plates/cups, plastic utensils, napkins, some convience foods/fruit/bread/milk so that you all can eat without taking more time and energy trying to prepare or drive out for food and cleaning up will a breeze.

You may also want to consider using this move to get rid of some things you or your family no longer use or need, you already are unloading drawers, closets, and cabinets and probably have an abundance of moving boxes so just toss and mark donation on
the things you can live without and drop these off before your move.

1. Donate or sell anything you don't need anymore. Don't bring it with you.

2. If you have to buy your own boxes go to a liquor store, their boxes they use to pack bottles are great for glasses and other breakables.

3. Pack one room at a time and mark the box with not only the name but a designated color. For example Blue would be your sons room.

Also try not to use shades of colors. Like light blue for one room and dark blue for another.

When you get to your new home, get there before the movers if possible and tack large poster with the color designated for each room in the room itself.

Reading isn't always the easiest thing to do when moving so I would give each mover a cheat sheet with what each room's color is and / or have a large poster with a legend of all colors and rooms somewhere localized where they can see it. Perhaps at the front door for example

Oh and last tip …

Give everyone a Last / First box and in this box have a seperate change of clothes, anything you will need on your first night such as toothpaste, soap, work stuff, school stuff , coffee, etc.

This will be the last box you pack and first box you open when you get to your new home.

Congrats on the new house!!! :-) You gotta tell me all about it, sounds exciting!!! (send me a email sometime)

When we bought this house we packed all the boxes one room at a time and labeled them all. That was extremely helpful. Also something we did was we went through everything and made sure we wanted to actually bring everything to the new house- its surprising how much unnecessary stuff you accumulate in just a year, lol. Anything we didnt use and didnt want cluttering the place with we put in storage.

Good Luck & Congrats :-)
